INDUSTRY: LOGISTICS
Needs
Svenske Post AB (Swedish Postal Services) could observe from manually performed random checks that the stated dimensions of their pallet freight did not correspond properly with their actual dimensions. Furthermore there was the inaccuracy of the man made measurements used for invoicing.
An automatic measuring fo all their pallet goods would therefore secure a large extra income based on the precise and concise statement of dimension and weight. Sven Post were therefore looking for an accurate dimensioning system, which combined with their existing scale system, could register weight and volume resulting in automatic invoicing of the correct amount.
Solution
The choice fell on Puls Design A/S who have developed a rotating laserscanner system (Rotating Volume Scanner System - RVSS), capable of dimensioning static object such as pallet goods. The consists of a one-legged gallow on which the rotating lasersystem is mounted, thereby occupying a minumum of floor space. The system can also be mounted on the ceiling or on existing concrete pillars to completely annihilate the need for floor space.
The system became integrated with a barcode system to register dimension and weight together with a unique ID. The laserscanner system itself consists of a rotating pole with a laserscanner in each end, rotating around a static object after which it generates a very accurate 3D-measuring of the object. The system can also be fitted with only one scanner, doubling the time needed to perform the scan. From the generated measurements the smallest box size able to containt the object, the weight and the ID of the shipment is forwarded to Svenske Post's system, from which they can invoice their customer accurately.
The system had a return of investment rate of only a few months. The system is now installed at all their postal centres.
